Renting a private island is no longer only for billionaires with their own yacht: there are island resorts and motus you can book entirely or almost, with dedicated staff and the feeling of having paradise to yourself. The key is choosing the right destination for what you want.
The great destinations
The Maldives offer the greatest concentration of private island resorts and overwater villas, with world-class diving. French Polynesia (Bora Bora, private motus) is more remote and romantic, ideal for honeymoons. The Seychelles combine protected nature, pink sand and sculptural granite. In the Caribbean, some private islands are rented in full with a house, chef and crew.
When to go
Each ocean has its window: the Maldives and Seychelles shine outside the rainy season; Polynesia is more stable from May to October. Good design avoids monsoons and crowds and makes the most of the best light and sea.
